Anyone know the difference between the chainring spacing of the Shimano 9spd and 10spd cranksets? It is very very hard to measure. I am trying to shim a 10spd compact chrankset to work better on a 9spd setup. Without shims, the chain rubs the large ring (while in the small ring) when in the 11T, 12T & 13T rear. I can live without the 11T, but I would like to get the 12T and 13T back.

I have the same problem with my Shimano compact crank, but for me it's not that big a deal. I generally run my bike with the chain on the big ring once I'm on the 14t cog or smaller. The gearing just isn't right for me when on the small ring and small cogs.
If you do shim out your bottom bracket to adjust the chainline, what will you use as the shim?

I am actually goning to try to shim just the big ring out to increase the spacing slightly between the two rings. To experiment I am going to use aluminum duct tape (at about 0.1 mm per layer between the big ring and the crank. If I find a happy thickness without causing the chain to get caught between the rings, I may make something more permanent. I think the tape will be just fine though pinched between two pieces of aluminum anyway.

I have gone the opposite way on a 9 speed crank, making it more like 8.
I used thin brass washers under the inner ring to widen the spacing betwwen the 2. No problems and it helped a lot with the rub.
Depending on the chainline, can you shift the bootom bracket to the right with a shim? That helps also, but may not be compatible with some outboard bearing cranks.

It may make more sense to move the inner ring in, since The outboard bearing design already pushed the crank out some when compared to the 9spd. I just have to check if will cause the chain to hit the chain stay.

You can buy brass shim stock in varying thickness from hobby shops and home centers.

I purchased a few different sizes of shims from here:
http://www.branfordbike.com/cgi-bin/perlshop/perlshop.cgi?ACTION=push&thispage=chains/chains3.html&ORDER_ID=178271031#item2
I will post which size works.

Big Al Ardizone of roadbikerider.com says to use 0.6mm spacers to run a 10sp crank on a 9sp setup.
Surprisingly, I've set 3 9sp bikes up with 10sp cranks and not run into this issue. 3 different cranks on 3 different bikes
However, I did find that all 3 bikes shifted better (in the front) using a 10sp chain.

Thanks. Exactly what I needed. I purchased 0.4, 0.6 and 1.2mm to try. A 10 speed chain would help, but on my 10spd set up, my chains only last about 1k miles, where my 9spd chains on 9spd drive trains go about 3k miles.
Also, the length of your chain stays will make a difference. (The longer, the less chance of a problem.)
Hopefully the spacers will come soon.

Just installed the 0.6mm spacers. Worked like a charm!

So where did you install the spacers? Small ring side to move the ring closer to the frame or big ring side to move the big ring away from the frame?
PLMK thanks... -gas

Big ring side to move it out.

Thanks...
I used a 1mm on the small ring side and it works like a charm.
Shimano 9sp chain and cassette on a FSA SL-K 10sp crankset.
Now I have to figure out how to do a friends bike. His drivetrain is a full 10sp campy setup and it has a slight chain rub.
thanks again.
