Does anyone out there know if it's against the law to kill a dog that's nipping at your heals? Please note, I don't have anything in particular against dogs - as long as they don't chase me! If it's OK I'm thinking about carrying those spike things they use in bull fighting. Might as make it sort of sporting. B.
PS - I was riding my D-fly when this happened today so I guess it's appropriate for this forum.

Personally, my weapon of choice is a frame pump. You can swing it like a Polo mallet
I'm not a lawyer, so don't listen to me when I tell you it is perfectly legal to use whatever force is necessary to stop a dog from harming you. As long as you feel you are in danger, you are allowed to use whatever force you feel is necessary.
If, however, you bat a dog on the nose and then, when he runs away, you chase him down and pretend his head is a polo ball, you better hope there are no witnesses.

Lon, I was on mile 100 when this happened - at that point I ain't out runnin' nothin'. And anyway this wasn't no ordinary dog, we're talkin' hound from hell here, we're talking a direct descendant of the hound of the Baskervilles. We're talking a beast that's looking to have legends told about it. This twernt no ordinary mutt out for a little woof woof. This monster was carrying a dinner plate! B.

You must be as fast as Mario Cipollini. He could probably outsprint a greyhound.

I'll ignore the legal issues of your question, but I will say that whatever you do, it should be done in self defense and you believe your safety is at risk.
What has worked for me in the past is to yell "NO!" in the loudest, most commanding voice you have. Use a deep voice if possible. This is a very fast thing to do and doesn't require getting out pumps, pepper spray, bull fighting thingys...
I've also used my water bottle to squirt water into the dogs face. ...of course, it works best when the dog is close. ...Not the position you want to be in.
You don't have to outsprint the dog for long. Dogs, in general, can't sprint for very long.
If you must (last resort), get off the bike and KEEP the bike between you and the dog.
LOL, a buddy and I once needed to outsprint a chihuahua! Wasn't hard, but I was laughing so hard, he almost caught me!

Was that dog somewhere north of Spokane on the way to British Columbia? It sounds like one I ran into.
It was this huge slobbering teeth bared beast which appeared out of no where. I got up in my best imitation of Cipo (no much of one admittedly) and took off. After awhile I sat back down smug in my confidence that I showed him. About 2 seconds later I realized he is back at my heals madder and meaner looking than ever. Back up and sprinting again. The only difference was I did not sit down for a long time to come. I bet that beast chased me for at least 3/4 of a mile if not more!

You might get lucky if you ride the same route repeatedly. My friendly neighborhood dogs chase me on every ride until one day one of them forgot to look both ways before crossing the street. Dog meets car. Car wins. The other dog didnt learn from his friends mistake and a few months later met Mr. Car but he was quicker and only broke a leg. Ever been chased by a dog with a long leg cast on. It is quite hilarious.

Hi
where i live we dont have problems with dogs the real problems are wolfs ,when this beast start chasing you it means that you are in a big problem, you know chase mean hunt and hunt mean lunch, and when you chased by a gruop of wolfs(4/5)you are in danger!!!
So how we protect against Wolfs? we take with us a pepper spray and all the time if we are riding in the desert we riding in a large gruops. We prefer dogs chasing and not wolfs hunting!!!!!!!

I agree with Carbon Legs. Pepper Spray seems to be a more logical approach. This should keep you out of legal troubles.

Pepper spray is good against many types of undesirables ...like the morons in their cages practicing road rage.
My wife ALWAYS takes hers on rides but I only carry one when walking our dogs. Seems to be too many unleashed dogs in our area and the pepper spray is good for breaking up potential fights (and thus expensive vet bills).
Regarding pack hunters like wolves (and other dogs), just remember to invite some slower sprinters than yourself on the ride :-)

You could always accidently drop it a steak with some special sauce on him, that would permanently put him to sleep. I least that way, you'll both get what you want.

Here’s pretty much what I’ve decided – I’m going to look at either eBay or illegalweapons.com and see if I can’t find a flame thrower or a small personal nuclear device. If there are any bad outcomes with the above mentioned items I’ll opt for that witness protection program mentioned earlier. So, if you don’t here from me in awhile and someone new logs on as "You_Know_Who_Heh_Heh" you can pretty much assume it’s me and not Lord Voldemort. B.

Rebecca, great plan sounds like a winner.
When I was single I need something like the witness protection program, because always being I was always being chased. Now, I just need the fastest darn bike out there, and I getting it tomorrow (a new Campy equipped Tetra Pro, Red Cabernet Fade, with only the head tube decal, the other decals were not need because nobody's going to be able to read them anyway as they get passed). Hey, but on a second thought that witness protection program might work pretty good even now, especially after my wife see the bill .
Good luck with the PLAN, if I see you I pretend not to know you.

That's good Rebecca. Now the department of Homeland Security, FBI, CIA, Carnivore... will be monitoring all your transmissions.
We all know you only "asked" about killing a dog. But you know, "dog" is just "god" backwards and probably used as a codeword for those peoples who's god may be Allah. And of course, some of those people would like to kill heathen dogs.
Nevermind. It's late, I'm tired and I'm going to sleep now.
Peace.
