Handlebar question
#9652 - 04/14/08 12:55 AM (71.97.95.7)

Riding Prima 199 3T. Came with the bike. Around 5K miles on them. Too much flex in the drops. I think it's getting worse. Or not.

Do they get worse? What's a good/better something? Go carbon? They're definitely bugging me.

Thoughts? Recommendations?

When Tom Kellogg built my bike he was very happy that I didnt want carbon bars, he didnt give a reason and I didnt ask. Ritchey WCS aluminium for me.

The party line I've always heard is that A) carbon bars are almost never lighter than aluminum bars; B) carbon bars are almost always more expensive than aluminum bars; and C) since carbon is ostensibly less resistant to impact damage, and since whenever your bike falls down it invariably takes the brunt of the impact on the handlebars, any diligent bike owner would have to unwrap their bars & inspect them every time it fell over. In short: too much work & too much money for no demonstrable performance advantage.

I really like my Windwood carbon bars. They are probably heavier than aluminum but they are ergo bars are fit nicely in my hands. I have noticed that everyone in my bike club rides with gloves except me.

The only downside that I can see is that I can not add aero bars to them, if I wnated to do that.
