Tall rider needs custom fit help.
#9661 - 04/23/08 03:30 PM (71.39.36.132)

I'm 6'5" and have wanted a Calfee for years. I miss the old active forum. Did moving here slow things down, or is Calfee less popular due to increased competition?

But I digress.

I'm planning on getting a custom Tetra. I wear a 37" inseam and have occasional right knee pain when riding - not when running. So I'm gonna need help getting fitted. I considered Zinn, but he's over $1000 more for Ti. I live in Albuquerque and would appreciate any input. Thanks.

A good bike shop will be able to measure you and determine if a custom or stock frame will be best. There are very few bike manufacturers that can make a custom carbon frame and all of them that I am aware of are more expensive than Calfee.

Take a look at the Calfee dealer locator on their website. They probably have a dealer in your area. I know of one other person on this forum that is 6'5" and I think he rides a 64cm stock frame.

As for the knee pain I ride with Speedplay pedals because they have free float allowing the foot to rotate without any restriction, and I do not have any knee pain at all. I have had both legs broken in several places and one leg is shorter than the other so I am susceptible to knee problems. Most pedals have a spring that will bring the foot back to center but Speedplay does not. Some people prefer the self-centering spring, however, it all depends on what you like. I did a lot of research before choosing a pedal system and am very comfortable with what I chose.

I think you will be happy with a custom Tetra. I am 6'4+", 36" inseam, and am on a 63cm custom Tetra single (tri/steep geometry), and recently took delivery of a 64/52 custom Tetra tandem, which is way cool.

Lesson learned on the tandem, is that level of expertise of Calfee dealers is not always high. Granted a tandem is a bit of an oddity, but at the end of the day I would have been better off dealing with Calfee directly, rather than through the dealer. And in fact I think Calfee is maybe headed this way, preferring to deal with its customers directly.

So for you, I think the most important thing is to find someone who is REALLY good at fitting you, doesn't really matter if he/she deals with Calfee, if you get the key measurements to Calfee they will build you the right frame, then you can build it up yourself, have the person/shop that fit you build it up, or take it some place else.

Thanks, guys. My knee pain is only on the right, and only after long climbs, so I don't think it's the pedals. I think I need to be more forward on the bike to reduce fore/aft stresses on my knees.

I'm still a few months away from making the plunge, so I don't want to ask Craig yet; my brother lives near Santa Cruz. Do they fit folks at the factory?

I think Craig does fit people at the factory. In addition, you can find a local source for a fit some where between $75.00 and $150.00 depending on where you go.

The Serotta fit system is a well respected fit methodology. I have attached a link to their dealer locator page.

This is the response Calfee Design gave me on being fitted at the factory, about 2 years ago:

"If you are in the Santa Cruz/Watsonville area, coming
into Calfee for a fitting in our bike shop area is fine.
If you have a local dealer, we prefer that your visit the
local Calfee Dealer and establish contact, etc. as they will be there to help you with the fine tuning and customization of your Calfee, and all your cycling needs."

I didn't follow through with getting the Calfee, still on my "things-to-do list".

Thanks.

I'm still reading tons and am really looking forward to finally getting my dream bike.

Anyone know if 180+ compact cranksets exist?

Shimano makes a 180. Not sure if anyone has anything larger than that.

To get 180+ cranks you'll probably have to go custom, like the ones made by Zinn.

D/A and Record offer 180 crank arms, but not in a compact crankset. I'm hoping the new 7950 D/A will offer at least 180. Otherwise I might have to eventually upgrade to a Zinn, which is bucks.
