Garmin 305 Shutdown Problem new
#9760 - 06/12/08 07:56 PM (64.101.131.124)

Just fyi:

This week I had my Garmin 305 shutdown on me in the middle of a race. I turned it back on only to have it promptly shut back off a second time.

The unit was fully charged and has been operating without incident since the day I bought it. The unit had been turned on for about 40 mins when it started having problems and it was not raining outside.

After doing a bit of research I found other Garmin 305 owners have had the same issue, so I called up Garmin the next day and asked them if they had any ideas. They only offered to repair the unit free-of-charge even though I was 3 months beyond my 1 year warranty (Man - Garmin customer support is sooo great!).

From what I read online it seems these units can have corrosion buildup inside the unit where the buttons touch the circuit board which causes the unit to shutdown randomly. This makes sense to me especially since I use mine alot indoors and sweat all over it quite a bit.

Anyway, I just wanted to give the other Garmin Edge 305 owners a heads up so if you see similar problems you can also give Garmin a call.

Happy Riding!

I was having a similar problem with mine. It would turn off in the middle of a ride, I would turn it back on but it would happen again. Garmin replaced mine under warranty. They didn't just send me a replacement head unit; they sent me a new boxed unit so now I have a lot of extra parts including another heart monitor. Garmin really does have the best customer service I have ever experienced.

I haven't had any problems with the new one yet. If you can be without yours for a few days, Garmin will probably solve the problem.

Thanks for the info Bruce! Great to know. I shipped it out today and will let you know how it all turns out. I'm going to bum my buddy's 305 till I get mine back. (he's taking a bit of a break from cycling right now - great for me)
