Hello Very interesting about the "Hell Ride" wish I was there!!
Back in the 1970's there was the "Death Ride" about 50 miles long. It was an out and back course going up the coast highway, mostly flat with 4-5 50-100 foot climbs going eachway. The route left from Santa Monica (LA county) going to Trancus market up by Zuma beach then back. Allways very fast and on a rare day over 100 would go. Back then there were few traffic lights and less traffic than now. The ride is maybe still going, but I don't live in LA anymore so who knows. For all the LA people who know the coast route of the Death Ride here is a challenge for you. I trained up and down the coast highway for years and at my peak back in summer of 1979, finishing up a 50 mile ride I rode from Trancus Market stop light to Santa Monica canyon traffic light following the coast highway, this is nearly exactically 21 miles in total length. At my very best with a good tale wind I completed it in a now mind boggiling when I think about it, 38 minutes and 39 seconds that was with my 36 spoke wheel traning clinchers. That comes out to a little over 30 miles an hour average speed. I would love to hear from anyone trying my challange to beat this time. Good luck with it you will need it!
