One thing that I learned when I commissioned my first custom frameset from Dave Kirk, was that the builder usually knows a heck of a lot more than the rider. I found it best to have in-depth conversations with builder, let him know what I liked, what I wanted the bike to feel like, what I wanted it to do, what kind of riding I was going to do and my realistic, honest appraisal of my capabilties on a bike. I let him design and build it. I didn't tell him what kind of tubing I wanted, other than I wanted a steel bike with lugs. I said nothing about angles, rake or trail, just about how I liked a bike to handle. What I got was spot on and has served me better than well for several thousand miles so far. He knows far more than I did. I would venture a guess that John Slawta is probably of the same nature.
I asked Dave in a previous post about buyer/builder communications: http://www.bikefanclub.com/forum/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/458/page/0/view/collapsed/sb/5/o/all/fpart/1
