There's a good chance the problem lies with the cables. After sitting for two years the cables might not be moving freely within the housing.

If you're comfortable enough with replacing the cables (would suggest both the cables and housing) do it. If not, let a mechanic do it. If nothing else, I would take it to a shop and let them tell you what they think is wrong.

A couple of good shots of WD-40 in the shifter mechanisms wouldn't hurt at all and may be of help.
