Eventually we all deal with people in cars who try to run us off the road, throw things at us, or otherwise harass us. Here are a few things to remember:
1. Get the plate number. It possible, carry a Sharpie in your jersey & write the plate number down on your arm.
2. Call the State Police. Calling the local/town police where it happened will sometimes require you to go to that town and register a complaint - your hometown police will not be able to help you.
3. Press Charges! Police are not there to "talk to people" or "Scare them"...They are there to arrest people, on charges. Sure, the charges may not stand up in court and you may not want to spend the time, and that's okay. Simply Drop The Charges a few days before the trial.
4. Know your rights, know the law. Most states post their cycling laws. Read them.
5. Know the law. Assault is the attempt to hit/injure. Battery is the actual strike/injury. When a person uses a car to harass you, you can make the case that it is an assault with a deadly weapon - and that is a Felony!
So the next time some guy tries to harass you with his car, remind him that you could bring him up on felony charges.
