Terry, I definately owe my friends, I didn't really want to use the Ultegra but I didn't really have the extra money. I ended up selling one of my mountain bikes to help me pay off the frame, buy a cyclocross bike and buy the components.
As for the brakes I would really like to get the records but the price is definately pretty steep. I gues I'm being a little picky but they are the only campy brakes I would consider since they are the only black ones. I'm not going to be having any silver on this bike with the exception of the chain, cassette and pedals.
Nev, I only started using the eggbeaters on my road bike this season. I had Look pedals before. I really like the eggs on the road, I did go ahead and buy the road cleats and I use road shoes. At first I had them set up for maximum float and I HATED them. Once I switched the cleats around they were fine. I don't really notice the smaller platform, of course I am pretty used to using these pedals on my mtb. If you plan on getting another pair of shoes anyway just get some road cleats and give them a shot.
BTW, I keep my mtb set up to minimum float as well. Riding in WV crashing is pretty common, when it happens I like to be able to get out of the pedals as soon as possible.
