Nev, I only started using the eggbeaters on my road bike this season. I had Look pedals before. I really like the eggs on the road, I did go ahead and buy the road cleats and I use road shoes. At first I had them set up for maximum float and I HATED them. Once I switched the cleats around they were fine. I don't really notice the smaller platform, of course I am pretty used to using these pedals on my mtb. If you plan on getting another pair of shoes anyway just get some road cleats and give them a shot.
You got the eggbeater road cleats? Is this what you have?
Do the rubber pontoons really give more stability on the pedal or are they just for walking? And where do they mount? I was hoping to not get another pair of shoes. For my mtb-ing, and therefore on my shoes, I have my cleats set up for maximum float, but curiously for the same reason as you. It feels easier to get out, especially when going down. Something I've done a lot this year, including two broken ribs at a 24hr race in AZ, but that's another story.
