Basically the reason for using longer cage derailleurs with bigger rear cog combinations is so that the extra length of the cage acts as an additional spring loaded lever to absorb the greater ammount of chain length used with larger ratios.Also if you use a short cage derailleur with a rear cog larger than a 25 you can instantly see the chain wrapping itself completly up under the bottom portion of the 25 and the cage arm being pulled excessively forward as the spring will allow. Moreso if you use the large chainring with the 25,and you listem carefully when pedalling you will also hear the chatter that goes with this situation and a shift under this condition can eventually damage the derailleur cage. Why is this such a hard concept to understand and that its easier to just use a longer cage as necessary with wider ratios since thats what they are made for.
