Since neatsfoot oil has been used for leather goods longer than Brooks has been in business I have trust that the people who used leather daily as a part of life knew what they were doing.
Final Edit: neatsfoot oil is derived from the animal from which leather was derived so it would make sense, wouldn't it, to use the same oil that was in the animal's skin in the first place?
No. You're missing the point. It's not that Neatsfoot oil is good or not, the point is that it's *not* good for saddles constructed like Brooks and Ideale where the leather is suspended between two points and the rider provides the heavy pressure, which can cause the leather to stretch and sag. That's precisely why the two aforementioned saddles (and their many copies) have tension bolts. Neatsfoot oil softens leather and makes it more supple, two qualities that are *not* desirable with saddles constructed like the Brooks.
Brooks saddles will last for many, many years. Using Neatsfoot oil with shorten the life of them. Since Brooks has been making their saddles for well over 100 years, my assumption is that they know what works, and what does't. They don't like Neatsfoot oil for use on their products.
