To experiment I am going to use aluminum duct tape (at about 0.1 mm per layer between the big ring and the crank. If I find a happy thickness without causing the chain to get caught between the rings, I may make something more permanent. I think the tape will be just fine though pinched between two pieces of aluminum anyway. Post Extras
