I have gone the opposite way on a 9 speed crank,making it more like 8.

I used thin brass washers under the inner ring to widen the spacing betwwen the 2. No problems and it helped a lot with the rub.

Depending on the chainline,can you shift the bootom bracket to the right with a shim?That helps also,but may not be compatible with some outboard bearing cranks.
