A few months after picking them up I noticed the rear hubs made alot of clicking sounds while coasting. I took it to my local wrench who tried greasing the bearings a bit more, but the clicking came back. He found the bearings that came with the wheelset were just barely too small for the hub housings and called Topo who confirmed the bearing sizing is a known problem with certain of their wheelsets.
Topolino sent the shop new bigger bearings for both the front and rear wheels which seemed to do the trick. The new bearings had no problems over the winter, and have been fine so far this year till about 2 weeks ago when the same clicking returned, but this time in the front hub. My wrench, Topolino, and I agreed it was time for Topolino to take a look at them, so off they went this afternoon .
I still love the Topolonos, they are light, stiff, quick and ride like a total dream, I'm just sick of dealing with the same hub issues over and over. My wrench said he can't understand why I persist with the problematic wheels to which I replied, "Try riding them all day on chip and seal and you'll know why."
Once I get them fixed, I'll probably keep them for special occaision rides or put them on my next Calfee but I at this point I want a wheelset I can just ride with relatively few mechanical problems. The Fulcrum Racing 1s or 0s have pretty hot styling IMO, and I'm told the hubs are rock solid since they are campy.
I haven't had any problems with the hubs on my Topos but then I only rode them for 4 months before breaking a spoke. It is my understanding that Topolino has done a lot to improve the reliability of their wheels, or so they say. I guess I will soon find out.
I think it is hard to go wrong with Campy. I have Campy hubs on my Mavic Wheels and haven't had any issues with them.
Let us know what you think of the Campy wheels.
