There is outside scientific research that says this is a good idea. You might want to go to some of the product websites, which should tell the the whys of taking these drinks. They're not energy drinks in the same sense that Rock Star or Red Bull are, nor are they protein drinks. Read the literature, it will tell you what you want to know.
Thanks Dave,
I will do a Google search for some research sources.

There is scientific evidence that indicates post ride consumption of proteins and carb are better absorbed by the body. The sooner the consumption, the better. The better quality the protein and carbs, the better it is absorbed and better for you. Whether the supplements are of "better quality" is for you to decide. The drinks are easy to consume, but pretty expensive.
Having said that, I've used sports drink mixes with complex carbohydrates (not simple sugars) since the mid 80's. I firmly believe that on a long ride, they reduce incidence of bonking (hitting the wall, if you're a runner). The stuff I use now also has electrolyte replacements and a small amount of protein. I always have a water bottle with my preferred mix on any planned ride longer than about 2 hours.
...I don't generally drink another bottle of mix when I finish. I do try and eat some real food though. Pretty much anything will do for me including junk! ...then I fall asleep on the couch
